Okay, so I’ve learned that the second Friday in January is often referred to as “Quitter’s Day”, when 80% of people, according to studies, abandon their New Year’s resolutions.
Here’s the thing, if the resolutions you’ve committed to are somehow flawed – meaning the change you seek is unrealistic, impractical, improbable – then you risk setting yourself up to feel overwhelmed, frustrated, and defeated in pursuit of those seemingly unattainable intentions right out of the gate.
As well, if you tend to be an “all or nothing” thinker and perfection over progress is the measure of your success, it’s understandable that you may entertain the idea of quitting your resolve for that which you aspire to achieve.
The message is not to limit your big, audacious, bold and lofty aspirations, but rather to turn those resolutions into realistic, specific, measurable goals that you break down into smaller more manageable, achievable and doable steps, actions and behaviors that support your forward movement.
And…being intentional about recognizing and celebrating the small wins and meaningful progress you are making all along the way toward your goals - and importantly, how that effort makes you feel - can support your continued motivation, commitment, and resolve to attain the success you envision.
So, what can you do to be among the 20% of people sticking to their resolutions this year? How will you define your success? What does that success look like and feel like for you?
